Canoe Trip

Sunday I was invited to join my brother and his friends on a wild canoeing adventure ... ok maybe not as much wild as more the adventure. Phil was supposed to come too but after a long walk on the beach he decided to do other things like get an oil change (lammmme) oh well as Mike stated he will not be able to use that excuse for the next 3,000 miles. Anyways off we went to Jonathan Dickinson State park (i think its a state park). At 11 am on a Sunday. We rented 2 canoe's for 5 people. Pat was in my canoe and was the steerer (ok now i'm making up canoe terms) and off we went. I was most fearful for the alligators, as my last memory of canoeing at Jonathan dickinson was when Pat and I were little and my mom and dad piled us into a canoe, we got lost, it started pouring down rain, our map got wet and crumbled and my dad kept saying that gators loved to come out of the water when it was raining. Talk about scarred for life ... or maybe just 15 years. Pat has been canoeing at the spot about 6 times, so at least we didn't have to worry about getting lost. We saw one gator, a bunch of turtles, birds, and my favorite an OTTER :) Yes an Otter ... I wanted to call it a seal when it poped its little head out of the water and looked straight at me. Unfortunately, I had a brain lapse when I was "packing" and thought well I'm not taking my nice camera because it will get wet in the canoe ... what I didn't think about was Ziploc bags. Oh well ... so the whole 2 1/2 hours we are canoeing I am thinking that would be a great picture and that and ohh that is so pretty ... so when I went to write this post I googled canoe and these are the lovely images that came up. I wish I would have had my camera when we saw the otter but he was there for 5 seconds and I highly doubt I would have been able to snap him unless I had my camera on and pointed in the direction. I guess there's always a next time, and next time I will bring my ziploc bag. So I got home, in one piece, smelling like river with some "apple" goo on my leg from when i stole them out of Mike & Steve's canoe and then Mike tried to snag them back, tired, sore, and picture-less. I was hurting pretty bad last night, like I hadn't lifted weights in a decade .. but today I'm a little better and next time we canoe I won't be scared we'll end up like this ...

Brain Dump ...

I keep thinking ... I need to blog today ... I need to blog today ... and still the days go bye and no blog. Maybe it's a lack of pictures or motivation ... either way I've been totally slacking. I try to keep this blog up so that I can look back and see what was going on in my life and what I was thinking at that time, basically like a diary or a journal. So in order to get caught up I'm going to do a brain dump. I saw this "method" if you will on a photographers blog and I thought what a great idea to just dump it out in one post so here goes nothing:

* Mom and I are going to Houston in August :) I'm excited to go for the reason we are going which is to see a totally rad concert with Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, LeeAnn Rimes, Luke Bryan, and someone else I think ... anyways should be a ton of fun! The other reason I am excited to go is because I hope to be able to visit my good friend Blair. I guess I can call her a Houston Native now, since she went off to the lonestar state for college she has not returned. And from all her stories and adventures I've heard on our annual PGA Park run I'm excited to finally come visit (which I've always said I would!)

* Work is going really good. I'm really liking my job and I hope it stays this way. Today is Friday though and I really can't get motivated to work just yet :) I really enjoyed working from home last week, I felt so much more organized. I was able to clean, do luandry, and everything else I needed to get done. Today I looked around the house and I thought ughhh I have so much to do!

* I made a hair appointment tomorrow to get some highlights. I felt like I was "cheating" on my hair dressor by making an appointment with another. I thought I'd be able to still get my hair done in Atlanta by the girl who's done my hair the past two years and I ablsolutely LOVE her! But alas, no more visits to Atlanta have been planned and my icky brown roots are almost too much for me to take. I sent messages to some old highschool friends that still live in WPB for there hair people and I just picked one. I'm hoping she's good and not too outrageously expensive. But then again everything is more expensive in West Palm and I might just have to eat it. I'll try her and see how it goes ... I may even try my dads hair guy one day, but making an appointment at "Fab Hair" just made me laugh :) Who knows though ...

* Speaking of hair, my mom lost hers from the Chemo she is on. :( It came and went pretty fast but there's nothing you can really do about it and she knew it was going to happen. I think she looks really nice in her bandana's though :) My mom's always going be the most beautiful person in the world to me.

* Vacation ... I think I need one... I can't wait for the weekend in the Keys in July :) Phil, me, my brother Pat, and hopefully his girlfriend Sarah will be making our way down South to enjoy my uncle's condo in the Keys. Hopefully this time we'll have nicer weather and we can hit up a good snorkle trip :) And it will be nice not having to fly. I think with all the going back and forth phil and I did I'm happy to stay away from the airport for a little bit. My next time on an airplane isn't till August with the Houston trip with my mom. The one in September to California for work. I'm still trying to pick a weekend to go visit my good friends in North Carolina. I was a direct flight to Charlotte though and the only carrier that goes from West Palm is US Airways (and they want $615 round trip) ummm NO! Then I have to fly out of Fort Lauderdale to get either Jet Blue, or Airtran maybe ... discount carriers that round trip its only $250 or so. But taking the time to drive an hour down there, traffic, gas, parking ... ugh! Annoying! Traveling can suck sometimes.

* The animals :) Safin is loving his new digs. Plenty of lizards and running place. He wants to go in and out all the time, and I think Levi is starting to learn how to leave him alone when he goes outside, before he used to pester him all the time. Speaking of Mr. levi, he is doing great. He loves his new backyard! My cousin John said the other night that our back yard is a dogs dream back yard and I have to agree. His toys are everywhere, hidden in bushes, buried under some palm frons, everywhere. He has his own personal fan which he def. needs during these hot Florida summers. Plus his best friend Arnold is coming to visit him in 2 weeks which I know he is going to be so excited about!!! And he's going to be one year old next Saturday!! I can't believe how fast time flies ...

* Speaking of awesome people's birthdays ... mine is in 13 days :) whoo hoo!

* We had my parents and brother over for dinner last weekend. Played some ping pong and ate some food. Phil grilled some filet and pork, which were yummy. It was a nice time and our first time eating at the dining room table in the new house. Oh and my caramel cheesecake dessert was pretty awesome too :)

* Old CD's ... I got them, I think everyone does. So while watching VHI's I love the New Millenium a few nights ago, I was reminded of some songs I used to L-O-V-E. The first being Clay Aiken, yes thats right ... I admit it. When he was on Idol I was a super Clay fan. His record came out and yes I went right over to Target and bought it. Since then his appeal has slowly faded and I think he's even on Broadway now. Anyways still it was a great CD. So I dusted off my old CD book and starting flipping. A lot of them are "mix cd's" and who's knows what are on them since I just labeled them "Mel's Good Mix" or "Melissa's REALLY good mix". What?!?!? I turned through some classic N'sync and backstreet boys and the earlier Britney spears Cds. I even found a few that I had just bought the CD because I liked 1 song. When I was in highschool I used to come home from school and watch the Rosie O'Donnell show before tennis and when she had music people on then occassionally I would become a new fan. I wonder how many songs I know all the words too ... putting in some old CD's the other day the words just came flooding back. I don't really think that I could go back and sit in one of my college classrooms and the lectures would come back the same way ... only with music I guess.

* I was not happy with Last Comic Standing last night. They picked 5 guys for the Semifinals, out of 16 people ... what no women??? What the hell .. wheres the girl power? I mean they have 2 GUYS that are the "talent scouts" and they can't pick 1 GIRL? And one girl was HILLARIOUS like the funniest out of everyone ... how did they not pick her? Phil and I were both mad over that one. We also agreed that there were funnier people that were not even picked for the semi-finals. I hope this season will not be like most of American Idol was ... BORING! What's up with my TV shows dissapointing!?!

I think thats a good enough brain dump for this Friday. Going to Mexican tonight!! YUM!!!

Hi Grandma =)

I can't quite remember exactly how this came about. But for as long as I can remember everytime I see a rainbow I see it as my grandma saying "hi" to me from heaven. I guess as a 12 year old who was extremely close to her grandma it was something my parents did to help me realize that she was still with me and she'd always be with me after she passed away. Plus she always loved rainbows and all the colors that came along with them. Rainbows don't happen everyday but the times I've seen them make me believe that my parents are right. I've seen them on days where I've just wanted to give up, I've seen them on days I've been really sad, and I've seem them on regular days. This spectacular double rainbow appeared over our house the over night ...the same house my grandma lived in. This is my second rainbow I've seen while I've been living in North Palm Beach and I can't help but think that she helped pull some strings to help me move back to Florida. It will be 14 years this December and I still miss her everyday, but I'm glad to have rainbows in my life to know that I'm never alone and she's always with me.

Beach Bums ...

Is it the weekend yet?

Around the house ...

This is what dirty looks like ...

Officially part of the family ...

Breezy has "officially" become part of the family. Every family member has had a "self portrait" taken by yours truly. Breezy passes the test with this attempt ... AND 2 people heads is twice as hard. What he'll do for some ginger snaps :)

Happy Birthday Dad!

To the best guy I know, my best friend for life. The guy who makes me laugh all the time, the one I see myself in. To the only guy I can play tennis with (competitively) and still manage to smile and laugh if I'm losing. To the other dutch cheese head and orange t-shirt wearing deJong. The guy who taught me how to kick my first soccer ball and coached all my games. To the mediator in my teen years when my mom and I would disagree. To the coach who took me to the only hill in town so that one day I would be quick, and I was. To the guy whose shoulder I cried on and whose advice I still seek out. The guy who fixed (and still fixes) anything broken or in need of repair. The guy who walked me down the aisle and gave me away. To my dad, the one who told me I could always come home ... and I did ... and I'm so happy to be back. Love you dad with all my heart :) Happy Birthday ... next year I hope to be eating at Febo in Amsterdam and having some pitat frite for your birthday :)
Love, your little girl :)
